One of the most important things to understand about riding a Personal Watercraft (PWC or Jet Ski) is that they do not have effective steering without throttle. Unlike a car or boat with a rudder, a PWC relies on jet propulsion to turn. If you release the throttle in an emergency, the steering is lost, and the ski will continue travelling in a straight line. This is why throttle control is central to your safety and the safety of others on the water.
Why Throttle Matters for Steering
The jet pump pushes water out of the rear nozzle, and when you turn the handlebars, that nozzle redirects the water flow. Without water being pumped (throttle applied), there is nothing to change direction. For new riders, this can feel counterintuitive – you may want to release the throttle to avoid danger, but that action actually reduces your ability to steer away from hazards.
Techniques for Good Balance and Control
Operating a PWC is about more than just steering. Good riding technique includes:
- Balanced Posture: Keep your knees slightly bent and weight centred over your feet to absorb chop and maintain control.
- Firm Grip, Relaxed Arms: Hold the handlebars securely, but don’t lock your elbows. This keeps steering smooth and reduces fatigue.
- Look Where You Want to Go: Your body naturally follows your line of sight – focus on the path ahead, not the obstacle you’re trying to avoid.
- Smooth Throttle Use: Apply steady throttle when manoeuvring; avoid sudden bursts or full release when turning.
Practice Before Your Licence Course
If you’ve never been on a Jet Ski before, getting some practice can make your PWCL (Personal Watercraft Licence) course more enjoyable. Borrowing time on a friend’s PWC or joining a guided Jet Ski tour is a fun way to become familiar with balance, throttle, and steering. These experiences help build confidence before completing your formal BoatSafe course with Boat Licence Queensland.
At Boat Licence Queensland, our accredited trainers will guide you step-by-step through all required techniques to ensure you are safe, competent, and ready for your PWC licence.
